Data bridge from the industrial scale into the QA form

In quality assurance, staff transferred weights from standalone industrial scales by hand into web-based compliance forms — a constantly repeating, error-prone workflow.

The existing weighing technology was highly precise and mechanically flawless, but had only older serial RS-232 interfaces with no modern networking features.

As a solo engagement, we built a hardware-software bridge: compact serial-to-Ethernet adapters on the scales and a background service that listened in on the serial data and transferred the weight straight into the web QA form when the physical button on the scale was pressed.

Manual transcription errors disappeared entirely, while the existing physical weighing technology stayed in use unchanged.

The QA team was noticeably relieved of recurring administrative and paperwork.
