Cross-department workflows at an aerospace supplier

Between the engineering department and production planning gaped a serious communication gap that slowed the handling of engineering orders. The engineers worked exclusively in a highly specialized legacy CAD data management system, while the production teams ran their operations through modern, agile project tools.

As a three-person team, and together with an external specialist consultancy, we developed an automatic backend sync: a web application listens for the release triggers from engineering and immediately creates matching, clearly worded work tasks for production.

The lead time for engineering changes fell from around fourteen days to about 24 hours — and that without forcing either department to give up its preferred specialist software.
